The cow digestive system consists of organs concerned with prehension, digestion, absorption, and expulsion. It extends from the mouth to the large intestine and passes through various regions and cavities of the body.
Here, in this guide, I will provide an overview of the various organs of the cow’s digestive system with hand-drawn diagrams.

What is the digestive system of a cow?
Figure 1 shows the hand-drawn presentation on various organs and parts of the cow’s digestive system. It also shows that the organs are conveniently grouped under two heads: the alimentary canal and the accessory organs.

All these identified organs from Figure 1 are involved in the following functions –
- Prehension and digestion of the received feed particles,
- Absorption of these digested feed, and
- Expulsion of the unabsorbed feed
However, the organs of the alimentary canal present a common architectural design (Figure 2). The walls of these organs comprise four layers, or tunics: mucosa, submucosa, muscles, and serosa or adventitia.

Thus, these organs have similar functions and almost similar structures that form the digestive system in the body.
Notes: The abdominal and pelvic parts of the alimentary canal are largely covered with the visceral peritoneum (serosa). However, you might learn the features of the four tunics of the tubular organs of the alimentary canal. It is easier to understand if you learn from the histology section.
Organs of the cattle or cow’s digestive system
According to Figures 1 and 2, the cow’s digestive system has two types of organs: primary and accessory. Thus, you need to differentiate and list the organs in each set of the digestive system.
List of the primary organs of the digestive system
Figure 3 highlights the primary organs of the cow’s digestive system. It is collectively known as the alimentary canal or gastrointestinal tract or digestive tract of the cow.

Various parts of the canal have become modified according to the needs of the cow’s body. However, they have been named differently as follows –
- Pharynx: It is a funnel-shaped space common to the respiratory and digestive systems.
- Esophagus: This is the muscular tube-like structure that starts from the pharynx and ends at the stomach.
- Stomach: Here, cows have a very capacious and compound stomach that consists of four compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum.
- Small intestine: It is also a tube-like structure, and its diameter is less than that of the large intestine. However, it is longer and consists of three parts: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
- Large intestine: It is comparatively shorter and the caudal continuation of the small intestine. However, it is wider and is called the large intestine; it also consists of three parts (Figure 3).
List of the accessory organs of the cattle’s digestive system
Figure 4 highlights only the accessory organs of the cattle’s digestive system. All animals, such as ruminants (cattle, sheep, goat), horses, dogs, cats, and pigs, have similar accessory organs.

Thus, the accessory organs of the digestive system include the following –
- Tongue: It is a highly movable muscular organ that anatomically divides into three parts: root, body, and apex. However, each part of the cow’s tongue possesses unique features.
- Teeth: There are four types (incisor, canine, premolar, and molar) arranged into two arcades. However, there are 32 permanent teeth in a cow.
- Salivary glands: They consist of three pairs of major (parotid, mandibular, and sublingual) and a few minor salivary glands.
- Liver: It is the largest solid gland of the cow’s body and consists of four lobes. However, it contains various surfaces, ligaments, impressions, and other structures.
- Pancreas: It is a soft, mixed, flat, and irregular quadrilateral gland of the cow’s digestive system. However, it is finely lobulated and attaches to the visceral surface of the liver by the mesentery.
Now, you might learn the details of the anatomy of these primary and accessory organs. Before that, I might provide a summary or overview of all the organs from the cow’s digestive system in one figure.
However, you need individual descriptions of these specific organs, with hand-drawn diagrams and real pictures.
How to learn and memorize the anatomy of the cow’s digestive organs?
As the cow’s digestive system is one of the largest systems, you might follow some strategies to learn it. In Figure 5, I provide an overview of the anatomy of the cow’s digestive organs.

This figure might help you retain the main anatomical features of specific organs. However, it will also reduce your revision time during your final examination.
What have I actually done in this figure? For each primary organ of the digestive system, I mention the following –
- Location of the specific part/organ of the digestive system,
- Parts of that specific organ (if any),

Here, the figure expresses the location of the cow’s tongue within the mouth cavity proper. However, it also expresses the parts (root, body, and apex) of the cow’s tongue.

Overview of the digestive organs of a cow
Here, I will provide only an overview of the organs from the cow’s digestive system. This is because each organ in this system needs a special, detailed description with diagrams, which I have already provided.
Mouth cavity
The mouth of a cow is bounded dorsally by the hard palate and ventrally by the body of the mandible. However, the caudal part is bounded by the soft palate and laterally by the cheeks.
Here, Figure 7 shows an overview of the cow’s mouth. It shows its entrance, exit points, and boundaries. However, it also shows the unique features of the lips, cheeks, hard palate, and soft palate.

Pharynx of the cow/cattle/ruminant
The pharynx of a cow is a musculomembranous sac common to the digestive and respiratory passages. I have already described the details of the cow’s pharynx with the hand-drawn diagrams and real pictures.
Figure 8 presents an overview of the anatomy of the cow’s pharynx. Here, the funnel-shaped pharynx with the broad rostral end continues with the mouth. However, its narrow caudal end continues with the esophagus.

Esophagus of the cow’s alimentary canal
The cow’s esophagus is a muscular tube that extends from the pharynx to the stomach, just caudal to the diaphragm. It passes through the neck, then the thorax, and finally to the abdomen.
According to Getty (1970), the esophagus is the first true tube of the alimentary canal of the cow.
During its course (as described already), it takes several deviations in relation to the cow’s trachea. Figure 9 shows the parts, course, and topographic anatomy of the cow’s esophagus.

Table 3 shows the relation of the cow’s esophagus to the trachea –

Compound stomach of the cow (ruminant)
The cow’s stomach is very capacious and occupies nearly three-fourths of the abdominal cavity. Here, Figure 10 shows the four different compartments/parts of the cow’s stomach with their exterior and interior anatomical features.

However, to understand their anatomy fully, you need to describe the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum individually. Let’s see what you should mention when you express the anatomy of any compartment of the stomach –
- Location and extension of the compartments,
- Exterior and interior unique features of the four compartments,
- Topographic relationship of these four compartments with surrounding organs,

The intestine of the cow’s digestive system is very long, beginning after the stomach and continuing caudally. Most of the intestine (both large and small) is situated on the right side of the cow’s abdominal cavity.
Here, the cow’s intestine is divided into two major parts: the small intestine and large intestine. However, each is divided into 3 parts as shown in Figure 11.

Anatomical overview of the accessory organs of the digestive system
You might learn the detailed description of each accessory organ of the cow’s digestive system separately. However, here I will provide an anatomical overview that might help you retain knowledge of these organs.
Follow similar learning strategies for accessory organs as you did for the primary organs of the digestive system.
Tongue
Cow’s tongue is considered the chief organ of prehension. It is located on the floor of the mouth and between the rami of the cow’s mandible.
However, the tongue is supported by the structures formed by the myolohyoideus muscles of the cow’s muscular system. Here, Figure 13 presents all the anatomical features of the cow’s tongue, including parts, papillae, attachments, and muscles.

Teeth of the cow
The teeth of a cow are the hard, yellowish-white structures implanted in the upper and lower jaws. Two sets of teeth are present in the cow: deciduous/temporary and permanent sets.
Based on the position, these teeth are divided into incisor, canine, premolar, and molar. Figure 14 shows an overview of the cow’s teeth, showing their types, structure, and number.

However, the figure also shows the temporary and permanent sets of teeth and their numbers.
Major salivary glands
The major salivary glands in a cow are three pairs of large structures. Here, Figure 15 shows the unique features of these three types of the cow’s major salivary glands.

All of these three pairs of salivary glands are situated on the side of the face and the adjacent part of the neck. However, they are called the parotid, mandibular, and sublingual salivary glands.
What should you learn from the anatomy of the salivary glands? Well, you should learn the following points from these salivary glands –
- Topographic location, color, and shape of each salivary gland,
- Main duct of the specific salivary gland along with its short course and opening.
Liver of the cow
The liver is the largest solid gland of the cow’s body. It is situated obliquely on the abdominal surface of the diaphragm.
However, the cow’s liver is held in position by the pressure of the various organs of the abdomen and ligaments. Figure 16 presents the most unique anatomical features of the cow’s liver.

Pancreas
The cattle’s pancreas is a soft, elongated, and flattened glandular accessory organ of its digestive system. Here, Figure 17 shows an overview of the anatomical features of the cow’s pancreas.

This organ is located transversely across the dorsal part of the abdominal cavity. However, it lies in close association with the duodenum, almost to the right of the median plane.

As a veterinarian, you might learn the anatomy of the digestive system of various animals. But learning this system for each animal individually takes more time and is also a little harder.
Thus, you need to know the basics of the anatomical features of every single organ of the digestive system. However, you might focus on the digestive system of only one species, which has the ideal features in its organs.
I have been teaching veterinary gross anatomy using different study methods for a few years (nine) on various animals. So I can help you learn veterinary anatomy easily and effectively across various animals.
In my experience, the very single organ of the cow’s digestive system presents the ideal anatomical features. Thus, I would like to highly recommend learning the anatomy of the organs from the cow’s digestive system.
First, you may learn the features of the digestive organs in descriptive form from the cow. Then, you may compare the features of the digestive organs from various animals like horse, dog, cat, and pig.
So, to get accurate anatomical information and comparisons, the cow’s digestive system is important for veterinarians. Figure 18 shows the importance of the organs in the cow’s digestive system.

FAQ’s on the cow’s digestive system
Though the cow, sheep, and goat are all ruminants, you will find a little variation in their digestive systems. In sheep and goats, the mouth cavity is elongated and narrow, and the rima oris is short compared to cows.
The torus linguae in the sheep and goat’s tongue is not prominent. However, the filiform papillae are soft and smooth compared to the cow.
Major variation is found in the liver, stomach, pancreas, and the salivary glands of the sheep and goat (Figure 19). Here, the ventral sac of the rumen of the sheep and goat is relatively larger than that of the cow.
You should learn the actual location and extent of every single organ of the cow’s digestive system. That means learning the topographic anatomy of the digestive organs might be your priority.
However, the anatomical features of some organs like the stomach, tongue, liver, and intestines are also important. Suppose someone is talking about the renal impression of the liver of a cow.
If you learn all the features, then you can easily recognize the location and its formation. However, you can easily understand that this impression holds the cranial end of the cow’s kidney.
Yes, you might practice the diagrams of every single organ of the cow’s digestive system. It is good practice for better knowledge retention of the anatomy of the cow’s digestive organs.
