The cow adrenal gland is related to the cranial aspect of the kidney and is described under the endocrine system. However, the right and left adrenals in a cow differ in shape, location, and relations.
Here, in this guide, I will describe the anatomy of the cow’s adrenal glands with hand-drawn diagrams and real pictures.
Quick answer: Each adrenal gland in a cow is related to its corresponding kidney and has a specific shape, location, surfaces, and relations.
I will help you learn these anatomical variations of the cow’s adrenals perfectly with the diagrams. This might be a great guide to the cow’s adrenal glands for your exam preparation.
Where are the adrenal glands located in a cow?
Figure 1 presents a hand-drawn presentation on the location of the cow’s right and left adrenal glands. However, it shows a great variation in the location of these adrenals.

Thus, according to the figure, the location of the cow’s right and left adrenal glands is –
Right adrenal: The cow’s right adrenal gland is located between the cranial extremity of the right kidney and the caudal vena cava. However, it lies partly into the renal impression (fossa) of the cow’s liver.
Left adrenal: The cow’s left adrenal gland is located approximately on the midline, cranial to the left kidney and caudal to the cranial mesenteric artery. However, it faces the medial surface of the cow’s caudal vena cava.
Shape of the cow’s adrenal glands
Figure 2 shows the shape of the cow’s right and left adrenal glands. However, this image combines a hand-drawn diagram with real images of the cow’s adrenal glands.

Shape of the cow’s right adrenal: According to the figure, the cow’s right adrenal gland is roughly V-shaped or pyramidal.
Cow’s left adrenal: The cow’s left adrenal gland is roughly C-shaped or heart-shaped.
Cow adrenal gland anatomy
Figure 3 provides an overview of the anatomy of the cow’s right and left adrenals. However, this overview helps you retain knowledge of the cow’s adrenal glands.

First, let’s see what you should describe about the anatomy of the cow’s adrenal glands –
Location of the right and left adrenal glands: They are located close to the cranial aspect of the corresponding kidneys.
Shape of the adrenals: In the cow, the right adrenal is V-shaped, while the left is C-shaped (Figure 2).
Base, apex, and surfaces: The cow’s right adrenal has a base, an apex, and three surfaces (lateral, medial, and ventral). However, the cow’s left kidney differs slightly and has only two surfaces.
Relations with surrounding organs: The right and left adrenal glands are related to various organs within the cow’s abdominal cavity.
Because the cow’s two adrenals vary anatomically, I will describe them separately.
Cow’s right adrenal gland
Figure 4 presents the unique anatomical features of the cow’s right adrenal gland. However, the location and shape of the cow’s right adrenal gland are described and shown in Figures 1 – 2.

Thus, I will describe the average size (measurement) and weight of the cow’s right adrenal. I will also describe the features of the base, apex, surfaces, and relations of the right adrenal with other organs, with diagrams.
Size and weight of the cow’s right adrenal
Size: The cow’s right adrenal measures about 8 centimeters in length. However, the breadth is about 3 centimeters, and the thickness is about 2 centimeters.
Weight: It (right adrenal) weighs about 12 – 13 grams in the cow.
Base and apex of the cow/bovine’s right adrenal
Figure 5 highlights the base and apex of the cow’s right adrenal gland. Here, the hand-drawn portion on the cow’s right adrenal gland helps you identify this gland in the real sample.

Base: The figure shows that one pole of the cow’s right adrenal gland is concave. This concave part is the base and rests obliquely against the anterior pole of the kidney.
Apex: The figure also identifies a pointed pole or extremity of the cow’s right adrenal gland. This pointed pole is the apex of the cow’s right adrenal gland.
However, the apex lies in the angle between the cow’s caudal vena cava and the dorsal border of the liver.
Surfaces and relations of the cattle’s right adrenal
The cow/cattle/bovine’s right adrenal presents three surfaces –
Medial surface: This surface is flat and triangular.
Lateral surface: The lateral surface of the cow’s right adrenal is also triangular but concave.
Ventral surface: This ventral surface of the cow’s right adrenal is triangular and uneven.
In Figure 6, I tried to identify these three surfaces of the bovine right adrenal gland. Now, I will describe the relationships of these surfaces with the surrounding organs.

Here, the medial surface of the cow’s right kidney is adhered to the caudal vena cava. However, it lies in close apposition with the right crus of the cow’s diaphragm.
In the area of the adhesion (close apposition), the adrenal vein opens into the cow’s vena cava.
The lateral surface remains in contact with the cow’s right kidney. However, the ventral surface contacts the cow’s pancreas.
The ventral surface of the right adrenal also presents a groove for passage of the caudal vena cava.
Left adrenal of a cow
Figure 7 highlights the unique anatomy of the left adrenal gland of a cow. Here, the shape and location of the left adrenal gland are slightly different from those of the right adrenal gland.

However, I will follow the same descriptive strategy I used for the right adrenal.
The cow’s left adrenal has no base and apex like the right one. Again, you will find only the surfaces and borders in the anatomy of the cow’s left adrenal gland.
Size and weight of the bovine’s left adrenal
Size: The left adrenal in a cow measures about 8 centimeters in length. However, its breadth and thickness are about 6 and 3 centimeters, respectively.
Thus, the cow’s left adrenal is slightly larger than the right.
Weight: The cow’s left adrenal gland weighs about 14-15 grams.
Surfaces of the left adrenal gland and relations with organs
In Figure 8, I tried to identify the lateral and medial surfaces of the cow’s left adrenal gland. However, this figure also shows the anterior (cranial) and posterior (caudal) borders of the left adrenal.

Lateral surface: The lateral surface of the cow’s left adrenal is slightly convex. However, it is related to the visceral surface of the dorsal sac of the rumen (the larger part of the cow’s stomach).
Medial surface: Here, the medial surface is flat and related to the bovine/cow’s caudal vena cava.
Borders: The figure shows the posterior border of the cow’s left adrenal is concave and deeply notched. Sometimes, this border is called the base of the cow’s left adrenal.
However, the anterior border of the bovine’s left adrenal is convex.
Structure of the cow’s adrenal glands
Figure 9 presents an overview of the structure of the cow’s adrenal glands. It shows the outer fibrous capsule, which fits closely and adheres to the gland.

However, the parenchyma of the cow’s adrenals shows the outer cortex and inner medulla.
Cortex of the adrenals: It forms the peripheral layer of the cow’s adrenals. However, it sends trabeculae into the adrenal medulla.
Medulla of the adrenals: The central part of the adrenal glands; it is yellowish.
Vessels and nerves of the bovine’s adrenals
Vessels: Each adrenal gland has two renal arteries. However, they arise from the renal arteries and the cow’s main aorta.
The vein is short and leaves the deep notch of the adrenal gland in the area of adhesion. However, it immediately enters the renal vein on the left and the caudal vena cava on the right.
Nerves: The cow’s adrenals are innervated by the adrenal plexus. However, this plexus is formed by the splanchnic nerves and coeliacomesenteric nerves.
FAQ’s on the cow’s adrenal glands
The sheep’s adrenal glands are both bean-shaped, whereas the cow’s adrenals show variable shape. Here, the right adrenal of the sheep lies along the anterior part of the kidney’s medial border.
Again, the sheep’s left adrenal is longer, flatter, and bent. It lies across the left renal vein and does not contact the kidney.
The horse’s right adrenal is comma-shaped, whereas the cow’s one is V-shaped. Again, the horse’s left adrenal is slightly shorter than the right.
However, both the horse’s adrenals are located at the medial aspect of the anterior extremity of the corresponding kidneys.
Conclusion
Cow adrenal gland anatomy describes its shape, size, location, and the features of its surfaces and borders. It also describes its relations with surrounding abdominal organs.
The cow’s right adrenal gland is V-shaped and has a base, apex, and three surfaces. Again, the left adrenal gland is C-shaped and has two surfaces, two borders, and a notch on the posterior border.
